Filter and group a report
Narrow a report to the transactions you care about and change how the breakdown is cut.
The five reports are shapes. Periods, filters, and grouping are what turn a shape into a question.
Set the period
- Open a report.
- Tap Period.
- Choose a preset, or set a custom From and To.
Match the period to the question. A month is right for “am I on track”; twelve months is right for “is this normal”, because a single month of an annual bill always looks alarming.
Filter the transactions
- Tap Filters.
- Narrow by account, category, payee, tag, or amount.
- Combine as many as you need.
These are the register’s filters, so anything you can find in a register you can report on.
Tags are the ones people forget.
Writing #vacation in the notes lets a Spending report total a holiday whose transactions live in six different categories.
Change the grouping
Tap Group by to cut the breakdown a different way. The same Spending report grouped by category, by payee, and by account answers three different questions from one set of transactions.
Grouping by payee is the one that surprises people. Categories tell you what kind of thing you buy; payees tell you who is actually getting your money.
From a chart to the rows
Tap a category in a Spending report to open its detail and see the transactions behind the number.
Use it whenever a total looks wrong. It nearly always turns out to be one transaction in the wrong category, and this is the fastest way to that transaction.
Save it as a card
Once a report is set up the way you want, save it as a dashboard card so you are not rebuilding it next month. Refer to Build your dashboard.
