Privacy and where your data lives

Pentos makes no network connections, so your budget stays on your iPhone and getting it out is your job.

Pentos makes no network connections. Not for analytics, not for crash reports, not for a service of any kind. Its App Store privacy label reads “Data Not Collected” because there is nothing to collect.

That is a design decision with real consequences in both directions, and they are worth understanding before you have six months of history in the app.

What this gets you

  • Your budget is nobody’s business but yours. There is no server holding it, so there is no server to breach, subpoena, or shut down.
  • There is no account. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to sign in to, nothing to lose access to.
  • It works everywhere. On a plane, in a basement, in a country you are visiting. The app behaves identically because it never needed a connection in the first place.
  • It cannot stop working. Pentos is a purchase, not a service. No subscription lapses and no company decision turns it off.

What this asks of you

  • Backups are yours to make. Nothing is copied anywhere automatically. Refer to Back up your budget and do it on a rhythm you will actually keep.
  • Deleting the app deletes your budget. There is no other copy to restore from. If you might come back, export a backup first.
  • One iPhone at a time. Your budget lives on the device it was created on. You can move it to a new iPhone with a backup file, which is a deliberate action you take rather than something that happens on its own.
  • Statements are read on device. A file you import is parsed on your iPhone and never leaves it.

Where the data actually is

In a database inside the app’s own storage on your iPhone, covered by the device’s own protections and by iPhone backups if you make those.

Exports you create are ordinary files. Once you save a backup to Files, to a cloud drive, or anywhere else, it is subject to whatever protections that place has, not to Pentos’s. That is worth a thought when you choose where to keep them.
