Move money between envelopes

Shift money from one envelope to another without changing the total you have assigned.

Plans change during a month, and the budget should follow. Moving money takes it out of one envelope and puts it in another. Your total assigned does not change, and To Budget does not move.

This is available in envelope mode.

Before you begin

  • Two categories, one of them holding money you are willing to give up.

Steps

To move money between envelopes, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Budget tab and tap the row of the envelope you want to add money to.
  2. Tap Move.
  3. Choose the envelope to take the money from under Take it from.
  4. Enter the amount.
  5. Tap Save.

Both rows update at once: one Available falls, the other rises by the same amount.

When to move instead of assigning

Use Move when the money is already committed somewhere and you are changing your mind about where. Use Assign when the money is still in To Budget and has never had a job.

The distinction matters because Move keeps your total assignment intact. If To Budget read zero before the move, it still reads zero after it.

Tip

Moving money between envelopes is the system working, not a failure of discipline. Every move is you deciding what you would rather have, at the moment the trade is real.
