Manage categories and groups

Add, rename, reorder, hide, and delete the categories your budget is built from.

Categories are your envelopes. Groups organise them, so a Budget tab with thirty categories is still readable.

Everything here is in Edit Categories, in the Budget tab’s toolbar.

Add a category or a group

  1. Open the Budget tab and tap Edit Categories.
  2. Tap Add Group to create a group, or Add Category to add one inside a group.
  3. Enter a name.
  4. Tap Add.

A group is either a spending group or an income group, and a category belongs to a group of its own kind. A category cannot move to a group of the other type.

Rename, reorder, and hide

  • Rename: tap the category and edit its Name.
  • Reorder: drag rows into the order you want. The Budget tab follows this order, so put what you check most at the top.
  • Hide: turn on Hidden. The category disappears from the Budget tab and from the category picker, and its history is untouched.

Hiding is what you want for a category you have finished with. The transactions that used it keep their category, so your reports stay honest.

Delete a category

Deleting is for a category you created by mistake. For one you used and no longer need, hide it: deleting loses the grouping on everything that referenced it, and reports covering those months become less useful.

Deleting a group asks what to do with the categories inside it.

Tip

A dozen categories you actually use beats forty you ignore. If you find yourself hesitating over which of two categories a purchase belongs in, that is usually a sign the two should be one.

Per-category settings

Two settings live on the category itself, alongside its name:
