Apply a rule to past transactions
Run a rule back through transactions you have already recorded.
A new rule only affects what arrives after it. Applying it retroactively runs it across the transactions you already have, which is how you fix months of a payee filed in the wrong category with one action.
Before you begin
- A saved rule. Refer to Create a rule.
Steps
To apply a rule to past transactions, follow these steps:
Open the Settings tab and tap Rules.
Tap the rule.
Tap Apply to Existing.
The button names how many transactions currently match.
Review the preview, which shows exactly what would change.
Tap Apply.
A summary reports how many transactions were changed and how many were skipped.
What gets skipped
Reconciled transactions. They matched a bank statement and are locked, so no rule rewrites them.
That is why the summary reports skips separately: a large skip count usually means the months you were aiming at are already reconciled.
Check the preview
The preview is the whole safety net, so read it. A condition matching more broadly than you intended is obvious there and expensive afterwards.
If a retroactive apply does go wrong, it is a single undo step. Refer to Undo a change.
