Split a transaction
Divide one transaction across several categories.
One purchase often belongs in more than one envelope. A supermarket trip that included a birthday present is groceries and gifts, and splitting it keeps both numbers honest.
Steps
To split a transaction, follow these steps:
- Open the transaction, or start a new one.
- Enter the total amount and the payee.
- Tap Split into multiple categories.
- For each line, enter an amount and choose a category.
- Tap Add Split for more lines.
- Tap Save.
The editor tracks Remaining to allocate as you go, and shows All allocated when the lines add up to the total.
What has to be true
- A split needs at least two lines.
- Every line needs a category, or a transfer account.
- The lines must add up to the total. The editor shows Over-allocated by when they exceed it.
How a split affects your budget
The parent row carries the total and has no category, so it never touches the budget by itself. The lines carry the categories, and each one is ordinary activity in its category.
In the register the transaction reads as one entry for its full amount, which is what your bank statement will show too.
