Record a transaction
Enter an expense, income, or transfer into an account's register.
Recording what happened is the other half of budgeting. An envelope’s Available is only true if the spending against it has been entered.
Before you begin
- At least one account. Refer to Add an account.
Steps
To record a transaction, follow these steps:
Open the Accounts tab and tap an account to open its register.
Tap Add Transaction.
Choose the Kind: Expense, Income, or Transfer.
The amount field follows: Spent for an expense, Received for income, Moved for a transfer.
Enter the Date and the amount.
Enter the Payee.
Start typing and Pentos suggests payees you have used before. A name it has not seen is created as you save.
Choose a Category.
Transfers have no category. Refer to Transfer between accounts.
Add a Note if you want one.
Tap Save.
The account balance and the category’s Available both change.
Tags
Write a tag in the note, in the form #vacation, and you can filter and report on it later.
A transaction can carry as many tags as you like.
Tags cut across categories, which is what makes them useful. A holiday’s flights, meals, and fuel stay in their own categories and still add up under one tag.
Rules can do the typing
Once a payee has a rule, transactions from it arrive already categorised. When you categorise a transaction from a payee Pentos has not seen before, it offers Create Rule so the next one files itself.
Refer to Create a rule.
