Add an account

Create an account for a real place your money sits, and decide whether it is on budget.

Every transaction belongs to an account, so this is the first thing to set up in a new budget.

Before you begin

  • The account’s current balance. Your banking app is the fastest source.

Steps

To add an account, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Accounts tab and tap Add Account.

  2. Enter a Name.

  3. Choose a Type: Checking, Savings, Credit Card, Cash, or Other.

The type is a label. It changes nothing about how the account behaves.

  4. Set On Budget.

Leave it on for any account you want to budget from. Turn it off for money you want to track without budgeting, such as an investment account or a loan.

  5. Enter the Opening Balance.

Pentos records it as a Starting Balance transaction dated today, so the account opens holding what it really holds. For a credit card you owe money on, enter a negative balance.

  6. Tap Save.

Caution

Whether an account is On Budget is fixed at creation. It cannot be changed afterwards, so if you are unsure, think about whether you want this money to appear in To Budget. If yes, it is on budget.

Closing and deleting

An account you have finished with should be closed, not deleted. Closing keeps its history, and Pentos offers to move any remaining balance to another account first.

Delete an account only when you created it by mistake. Deleting takes its transactions with it, and any report covering those months changes.
